How to Jump Start Your Car's Dead Battery with Another Car

Follow these simple steps if you would like to jump-start a dead battery using a different vehicle.
  • Once you have the two vehicles close to one another, be sure they are both in park and cut the engine off. Now it's safe to open the hoods.
  • Take a minute to get familiar with which side of each battery is the negative or positive end. The jumper cables should be red for positive and black for negative.
  • The rest is simple, connect red positive cable to red positive dead battery. The other red to positive on charged battery.
  • Black jumper cable to the good battery negative end, and finally, place last black cable on metal surface near dead battery to stop sparking.
  • Time to start the car, then see if the other car starts. Once it does, remove the cables.
