Having a dead battery is something many drivers encounter at some point or another. While it may seem like a big deal, it’s easier to charge your car’s battery than you might think. Make sure the battery charger and the car are turned off. Preparing the battery is the first step.

Remove the black (negative) and the red (positive) cables from the battery or the plastic caps from the battery’s terminals. Clean the battery’s ports to avoid shorts. Connect the charger’s positive cable to the vehicle’s positive post followed by connecting the negative cable to the vehicle’s negative post. It must be done in this order.

Turn on the battery charger, and set it to a lower setting. Some battery chargers have a timer that allow you to set the time for a designated period. When the battery is charged, remove the cables doing the positive first and then the negative.
